Teen misfits Gary and Wyatt design their ideal woman on a computer, and a freak electrical accident brings her to life in the form of the lovely, superhuman Lisa. She outfits Gary and Wyatt in cool clothes, surprises them with a Porsche and helps them stand up to jerks Ian and Max. But, all the while, the boys must hide Lisa's existence from Chet, Wyatt's nightmare of a big brother.

The premise here threatens puerile perversion, female exploitation, and an uncomfortable age gap... – but in fact Hughes gives Lisa the confidence, agency and power that the boys lack, and makes her more fairy godmother than sex object.

Sebastian L On paper Weird Science ticks all my boxes for pure '80s gold, but somehow a lot of the fun is lost along the way. Largely the problem is structural, but there are directorial issues as well, and the story never really becomes more than an outline and an excuse for pretty girls and adolescent humour.
