Critics Consensus

Hardly in the same league as John Hughes' other teen movies, the resolutely goofy Weird Science nonetheless gets some laughs via its ridiculous premise and enjoyable performances.

Weird Science | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Wendy Ide Times (UK) It’s a silly sci-fi sex comedy, but there are amusing moments to warrant revisiting. Feb 8, 2024 Full Review Weird Science | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Anton Bitel Little White Lies The premise here threatens puerile perversion, female exploitation, and an uncomfortable age gap... – but in fact Hughes gives Lisa the confidence, agency and power that the boys lack, and makes her more fairy godmother than sex object. Aug 9, 2023 Full Review Weird Science | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Paul Attanasio Washington Post The movie is the latest in the "Wouldn't it be neat if . . .?" school of movies. Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Weird Science | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Emilie Black Cinema Crazed ...watching the film with the fact that it’s close to 40 years old, it is more than watchable, it’s enjoyable for most of the runtime. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 24, 2023 Full Review Weird Science | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Allison Rose FlickDirect If you were captivated by the originality and humor of Weird Science in theaters, you'll delight in revisiting this John Hughes classic that transcends generations. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2023 Full Review Weird Science | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Alan Jones Starburst Weird Science describes itself as *a special effects comedy*... it comes across more as a feeble blend of tediously vulgar, stale half-baked ideas. Sebastian L On paper Weird Science ticks all my boxes for pure '80s gold, but somehow a lot of the fun is lost along the way. Largely the problem is structural, but there are directorial issues as well, and the story never really becomes more than an outline and an excuse for pretty girls and adolescent humour. Some rewrites and further development could have turned this into a real gem. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/31/24 Full Review Darrin L Didn't watch it in 1985 and now I know why. An absolutely horrific script, terribly acted. Use these 90 minutes for literally anything else, I beg you. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/26/24 Full Review Jason N This is a great coming of age movie. Laughed most of the runtime Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Leaburn O Fun very 80s teen flick. Nothing serious to see here but just a bit of well produced 80s silliness. Watched it on iPlayer. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review John C We live in a more morally puritanical, less easy-going time than the one in which Weird Science was made, and this explains most of the comments about how this is John Hughes's "most dated" film. While not offering as much character exploration as, say, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science is still enjoyable if you can appreciate the good-natured fun it offers at face value. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/24 Full Review Cyns Corner Gawd, I'd forgotten how utterly terrible this movie was. I hated almost every moment I was watching this in preparation for a livestream review. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
